Washing tips

Choose a gentle, silk-friendly Silk detergent to remove residues and stains. It’s important to choose a mild detergent as the natural fibers of silk are easily damaged by harsh cleaners.

If you do not have any silk detergents available, we recommend using shampoo as an alternative. As they are both natural strands, hair and silk have a similar make up that allows for shampoo to be an effective substitute for detergent.

There are three options for washing your silk bedding: hand wash, machine wash, and dry clean.

If you choose to wash your silk bedding by hand:

  • Mix proper amount of silk detergent with cold water.
  • Allow your silk bedding to soak in the mixture for 3 to 5 minutes if there is a stain.
  • Lift and plunge the silk bedding in and out of the water. This is to mimic the motions of a washing machine without performing harsh scrubbing that would damage the silk.
  • Rinse with clear water until it is clean.
  • Do not twist the fabric.
  • Hang dry your silk bedding.

If you’d prefer to wash your silk bedding with a washing machine:

  • Choose the delicate cycle and use the cool water setting.
  • Place your silk bedding in a protective mesh bag before placing it in the washing machine.
  • Add a proportionate amount of detergent and start the washing machine.
  • Select the shortest spin time for the wash cycle to avoid weakening the silk fibers.
  • Run a touch up program or hang it to dry.

If you opt for dry cleaning your silk bedding:

This is by far the most convenient option. Dry cleaning leaves your pillowcases wrinkle free after each cleaning.

How to Dry Silk Bedding?

Drying your silk beddings is relatively easy:

  1. Take your silk bedding out of the washing machine or wash basin. Resist the urge to wring the fabric, instead allowing it to drip.
  2. For a small piece like silk pillowcase, Lay out a clean, absorbent cloth such as a towel on a even surface and lay it on the top to roll the towel to reduce the water.
  3. Run a short program or touch up program to remove the excess water.

What to avoid when washing silk bedding.

Caring for silk bedding is fairly easy, though it requires extra attention to what you can and can’t do.

  1. Do not use bleach, fabric softener, or other similar cleaning materials that ‘brighten’ a fabric.
  2. Remove your jewelry before sleeping on your silk beddings to protect it from scratching.
  3. Never use hot water for cleaning silk – even if there are stains. In such a case, you can use cold water while spot cleaning the stained area.
  4. Do not soak your silk bedding for extended periods of time.
  5. Do not leave your silk bedding exposed to direct sunlight for too long to protect your silk bedding from fading.
  6. Do not tumble dry your silk beddings with high heat.

What to do to Help Your Silk Beddings Last

  1. Wash your silk bedding from the inside out when possible.
  2. Put some white vinegar into the water to make the mixture. Wash silk bedding at the second wash of the mixture can retain the luster of the silk.
  3. Ironing from the back side of the fabric in order to retain the luster of silk.
  4. It is best to use steamer to get wrinkles out of your silk bedding. Use the lowest setting and move continuously so as not to overexpose sections of the silk to heat.

And that’s it! Washing your silk bedding isn’t the rocket science you might think it is. With careful attention to these instructions and by simply keeping these pointers in mind, your silk beddings are sure to last.
